Listen: Title track from CATHERINE RUSSELL’s: “INSIDE THIS HEART OF MINE.” It’s currently #1 on the JazzWeek Chart and one of my recent favorites.

"Could melt the ice in bourbon on the rocks"
- Tristram Lozaw, Boston Globe

CATHERINE RUSSELL's father, Luis Russell led one of the great early big bands (see her baby pictures with him and Louis Armstrong) and her mother was a member of the iconic 1940’s group International Sweethearts of Rhythm. Catherine will be at Yoshi’s Oakland on Jun. 9th & 10th. The album contains songs from the 1920’s to the present, originally performed by Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, Peggy Lee, Maxine Sullivan, Howlin’ Wolf, and Catherine’s dad. Hear other preview tracks on her website and on Fresh Air’s site that includes Terry Gross’ interview with Catherine recently rebroadcast. NPR’s Weekend Edition Saturday for May 1st has an interview and two other preview tracks as well.

One Of My Holiday Favorites

Scott Yanow: “This is a well-rounded set of Christmas songs played by some of Verve’s top artists. Shirley Horn, Betty Carter and Abbey Lincoln take two vocals apiece, and the seven instrumentals feature such major players as trumpeters Roy Hargrove and Nicholas Payton, bassist Christian McBride, guitarist Mark Whitfield and pianist Stephen Scott.”

Roberta Gambarini’s new album "So In Love" was just nominated for a Grammy. And Roy Hargrove, who is on some selections and will be at Kuumbwa Jazz on Tuesday, Dec. 8th, has his own nomination for a solo on his latest. We’ll listen to some Roberta Gambarini selections on the next show, including her wonderful take on “Estate”.
